Let the punishment fit the crime! that’s the call going out from Prime Minister Freundel Stuart to the law courts.
Stuart, addressing hundreds of Democratic Labour Party (DLP) supporters at the 56th annual conference in George Street, St Michael, said such a move could help the police in combating crime in Barbados.
In praising the police for reducing crime, he said: “The police efforts must be reinforced in the courts of law by timely dispensation of justice in a manner that ensures that the punishment inflicted fits the crime which was committed.”
Meantime, he has promised that the absence of “paper qualifications” will soon stop being a barrier to highly experienced civil servants getting promoted to top posts in Government. These civil servants have been told there were some posts for which a degree was required.
Addressing the final day of the conference Stuart said that the Public Service Order of 2001 was currently undergoing the “necessary review” while the Public Service Act of 2007 was soon to be amended.
The moves will help the advance of public servants with years of working experience but without the required certification to land certain jobs.
